Winter Olympic Athletes sport new protective helmets utilizing a revolutionary technology from a Silicon Valley Company

SAN JOSE, CA, February 14, 2006—Athletes at the Winter Olympics, including the U.S. Ski Team, will be wearing protective helmets lined with flexible, fusion-bonded honeycomb, a technologically-advanced material ideal for high-impact sports.

Extremely lightweight and comfortable, it’s the ultimate cushioning for the equipment of champions Libby Ludlow, Scott Macartney, Julia Mancuso, Jonna Mendes, Steve Nyman and Marco Sullivan. Combining innovative technology and style, the Skull Comp Helmet won the 2006 Volvo SportsDesign Award for Active Safety in sports at the ISPO fair in Munich.

“Derived from the aerospace program, Supracor’s honeycomb technology is fast replacing conventional cushioning materials such as foam and gel in a wide range of innovative, cutting-edge products, including protective gear for our Olympic athletes,” said Susan Wilson, director of Research, Design and Development. “The structural geometry of aerospace honeycomb combined with the flexibility of thermoplastics gives Supracor® honeycomb unparalleled versatility and performance.”

POC, a leading Swedish manufacturer of protective ski equipment and the official supplier to the U.S. Ski Team, has integrated Supracor’s urethane honeycomb in its helmets and back protectors to help prevent serious head, neck and spinal injuries from racing accidents on the slopes. When Olympians hit the ground at top speed, the honeycomb in their helmets and back protectors helps save their lives by providing maximum shock-absorbing protection.

Supracor’s unique cellular materials have “memory” and varying resistance, enabling them to instantaneously resume their original shape, conform naturally to head and body shape without restricting movement and spread impact over a wide area. In addition, Supracor’s perforated Stimulite® honeycomb cells circulate air and evaporate moisture to help maintain ambient body temperature in the heat of competition.

Supracor is the originator of fusion-bonded honeycomb technology, a flexible form of aerospace honeycomb utilized in products that promote the health and safety of people and animals. Initially applied to wheelchair cushions and hospital mattresses for pressure sore prevention, Supracor’s Stimulite honeycomb is the basis of a revolutionary line of personal care products that are clean, safe and uniquely comfortable.

A versatile, engineered material, Supracor’s shock-absorbing honeycomb can be found in critical safety applications such as bullet-proof vests, jet fighter aircraft seats and bumpers for amusement park rides. Supracor’s products are exclusively made in California’s Silicon Valley from recyclable materials.
